Rare Hank Williams Performance: “Cold Cold Heart” Rediscovered

In this live performance, legendary Hank Williams is introduced to the stage. Hank says, “Thank you, Roy. I’ve got a song here that I’d like to do that’s been awful kind to me and the boys.

Hank continues talking before the song, saying, “It’s bought us quite a few beans and biscuits. It’s the best song we’ve ever had financially. It’s a tune called Cold Cold Heart.”

Hank is wearing a cowboy hat and shirt adorned with sparkles and fringe. His light-colored outfit stands out in the yellow-tinted, old camera footage. He’s backed by a fiddle and his own acoustic guitar playing.

This classic footage features one of the most influential American singers of the 20th century. Hank recorded 55 singles that reached the top 10 of the Billboard Country & Western charts, including three number 1’s.

‘Cold, Cold Heart’ is included in the ‘Great American Songbook.’ Legend says that Williams was moved to write the song after suspecting his wife Audrey of an affair.

Hank sings the emotionally-charged lyrics, “A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart. Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart.”

Hank’s impact on country music is still felt today. He charted number-one hits even after he passed away. ‘Cold Cold Heart’ is one of Hank’s most memorable country tunes.
